Just in a Nick of Time....

...before I was about to totally incinerate and dispose of my complete BattleLore collection out of apathy and disappointment, this potentially wonderful news is posted. Perhaps now we'll see some suitably impressive expansion armies, leaders, spells, monsters, etc. and leave the ostriches, cows, and hyenas to happier places like the pens in Agricola or Zooloretto. Thoughts?

Intrigued

Don't know why, but the idea of playing a hard-er core Railroad Tycoon has never really been appealing to me. But, I have to say, I'm intrigued by the latest Age of Steam expansion.

BattleLore

  1. Call to Arms looks pretty darn cool. I've read through it a bit, but I haven't gotten to try it out yet.

  2. I need to play again soon.

  3. Did y'all see that you can now buy the epic battles expansion? I think I might just give those guys my credit card. Give me one of everything, and two if it's really cool.
  4. I need to play again soon.

  5. Have y'all been following the controversy about the cleric lore cards? Check it out. I don't see much of a problem. I explain my position at the end of that thread, but I'll repeat it here in a nutshell. I think the cards are fine (almost). They can theoretically do a lot of damage, but it's diffuse. That's a key point because in C&C a unit battles at full strength until it is gone. Where I have a minor, very minor, problem is that you have that tiny, tiny chance of a huge impact. If I went w/ a house rule, it would be that no unit may take more than 2 figures of damage. This would nicely limit the max damage while still rewarding a high level cleric.

  6. I really need to play soon.

  7. Once I realized the cleric direct damage cards were diffuse, I concluded a high level cleric wasn't such a good bet. All the other cards are expensive, and you might not even get the cards in question.

  8. Did I mention I want to play again soon?

Happy Birthday To Me!

Today's my birthday. I have worked out a deal regarding gifts. I buy a bunch of games I want and give them all to Meredith. She doles them out as gifts. I get games I want, we get good shipping, and there's still an element of surprise. Win-win-win.

This birthday brought me Call to Arms and Rommel in the Desert. Yeah!

This news is especially good news since Rob is taking his copy of RitD with him. We must not be Rommel-less!!!

A Call To Arms

Got an email this morning saying that the BL supplement "A Call To Arms" will be shipping starting next week. I've pre-ordered my copy, and I can't wait. Should be excellent. Click here for more info.

BattleLore News

I just found this. It's about a week old, so it might be old news to some.

Wow! I didn't realize these guys had such an ambitious plan for BL. They are clearly planning to have an entire 'universe', and it seems like they have the wherewithal to pull it off, too.

If everything turns out as great as the base game has, this should be amazing!

Chimaeracon 2007

Yet again I have to ask myself: How does this happen?

Last time it was when I discovered another gaming group here in town. This time I found out at the last minute about a gaming con here in town.

Chimaeracon 2007 will be next weekend at Crossroads Mall near the "intersection" of 410 and 10.

I told Meredith I'd like to go, and she informed that I'd be painting the baby's room. There's a double irony here. I don't think the room needs to be painted. She, being pregnant, can't paint. Once more I ask myself: How does this happen?

I hope to attend at least briefly. It's gotta be more fun than watching the paint dry.

Gaming Monday & News

I'm planning on being around Monday ... is anyone else? The typical games in the bag, although I may shuffle things up tonight. To Court the King will definitely be there, I've got a rep to defend.

In other news -- I got the Sword of Rome expansion. Still have to read the rules, but it's been two months since my last CDG. Apart from Rome, I could go for another round of Here I Stand... and Valley Games just billed for Hannibal, so that will probably be here in May. But that's only #2 on my excitement list. My premier, gotta-have-it game should be out in July.

Chat away!

Three's a Crowd?

So there's us, the SABG, then there's the "Game Sluts" (ahem), but did you know there's also another game group in San Antonio?

Check it out.

Crazy. Here's this whole group with overlapping interests, and yet we've never had "formal" contact with them. I heard about this from a guy my wife works with. He's the one who came to an opening gaming night with several games from the Gipf project.

I can't decide if this story is about how big the world is or how small it is...

Newest SABG Member

No, I'm not recruiting space aliens, at least not yet. That picture is among the first portraits of "Sprout" Kostek. I'm sure there will be many more to come in the future.
The doctor told us he was 90% sure Sprout is a girl, then minutes later he said "Oh, hey, what's that?" and changed to 90% sure it's a boy. After that, I hope you understand if my confidence is not high.
Sprout's ETA is late June/early July.

Mmm. Salty Earth.

I've owned most of the Card Driven Wargames ...

But I've never snagged a copy of the Grail of CDGs. That will change shortly ...

Actually, with all of the hype I'm somewhat worried that this can't live up to it. I've actually sold about half of the CDGs I've owned without ever playing them, and only played most of the others ~2-3 times each. (Of course, until I moved I didn't have any opponents).

Still, smells like a pre-order to me.
