BattleTech...

As some of you know, I've always been a fan of MechWarrior/Battletech. I picked up a new edition "Classic BattleTech" Intro box set (the one with maps, and minis), and hope to try it out with someone someday.

In the mean time, I've been playing around with this....

It's free, and can be downloaded Here. You have to download their client (similar to Steam), and then download the game. Pretty nice. Still trying to figure out how to turn my mech's torso.

I didn't know that -- I love Battletech! I'll download this after baseball tonight, and would try the minis version at the first opportunity.

Downloading now...

I played an absolute ton of the BattleTech board game back in old, Classic days. There's nothing quite like driving an Atlas across the battlefield. I felt like the system kind of jumped the shark with all the clan invasion stuff. I much preferred the original five faction version of the universe with mercenary companies jumping between sides.

One of my coworkers is an absolute die hard BattleTech fanatic. His cubicle is adorned with about 20 fully painted minis engaged in battle. I think I'm the only one in the building who understands... sort of...

Why aren't you at the Notre Dame game? Rooting for the Horns?

There's still lots of rough water ahead for Texas, as the Aggie jihad is always lying in the weeds. Damned cultists.

Well good to know that. I'm by no means an expert of the tabletop game, but got the intro game and it looks great.

Chris and I had talked about this boxed set I got a few months ago... he said that my best bet for trying this out with SABG would likely be Dennis, or Ben, or Steve. heh.

There are others in the building! It's Heavy Gear and the latest version is Heavy Gear Blitz. Not to mention Gear Krieg and its combat walkers.

Still haven't been able to install the game. Twice I get the whole thing downloaded, then "error while patching", then it hangs. Pausing or stop/starting download doesn't help. If I close and reopen the launcher, it starts downloading from scratch again. Genius.

I just gave the game a whirl... Well... its free, I'll give it that, and it does feel like MW2.

I think I'll come back when the planned joystick support is implemented. I knew there was a reason I kept my MS Forcefeedback Pro tucked away in the closet.

Mark,

The Gear Krieg stuff looks cool, though I fear the only way I'll get into miniatures is through massive exploitation of Sri Lankan contract painters.

Dunno what's going on with yours Dennis...

It only supports skirmish mode. Battles last about 5-10 minutes. Not very deep, but free and it's pretty darn fun.

I can refer you to an authority on child-labor slave ships in Sri Lanka eager to receive your unpainted minis! They don't even flinch at the thought of a Napoleonic Highlander and the intricate tartan of his kilt.
