Saturday Gaming with a Celebrity

Jacqui and I will host this Saturday from 10:00 am (or perhaps a touch earlier) until whenever. And perhaps we can entice the Chit Chatter of Today. Or perhaps not.

Update: Borders has BSG for $40. And those of you who have Borders Rewards can get it for under $30. So there will be a copy here. Just in case.

Does this mean we will play Celebrities? I think it is appropriate.

I'll be there around noon, after my final exam.

By the way, December 10th has come and gone, and my mailbox is eerily quiet....

Dennis - I was thinking about that last night. So this is a good thing... right?

Tonight and most of tomorrow (Saturday) I'll be at my son Jake's tournament (he plays for Johnson's freshman A team). He scored 18 last night and they have a pretty good team at 5-1, so it's been fun so far.

Sunday the Cowboys play at 7:15, so I can play anytime before then. Jon is also free, anyone else considering Sunday gaming?

Yes, silence is good. "Letters of non-concurrence" ("no" votes from the promotion and tenure committee, with the chance for a rebuttal) had to go out by Wednesday.

So if I am awesome and work very hard tonight, I should be able to drop by about 10 or 11 and leave about 2 ish. Maybe. We shall see.

I am still kind of in shock with todays events.

*sigh*

We really were going to try to make it. But Ian's had a fever otherwise been sick (I won't share the details, but you don't want it). And now I feel like crap.

So there's like a 1% chance we'll make it or less. And no, Michael, Jeff's not coming either (he's taking care of sick people!).

There should be an "and" between "fever" and "otherwise" in the above comment. :P

"I am still kind of in shock with todays events."

I need closure on this. To what does it refer?

My boss was helpful. And constructive. And gave me actually feedback. And said nice things about me.

Four things that have not happened in the 3 years I have worked for him.

Usually its 'like I don't have a brain in my head' or that 'I don't care about grad school or my candidacy exam' Things of that nature.

So as you can see, I am a little -- surprised. And I might not fail out of grad school since I am actually getting help on my exam. Which is good. Since I like grad school. And research.

Evening!

I'm an old board gaming fanatic and am always looking for a good group of gamers. I've enjoyed Eurogames for several years and am excited to see there are a few players here in San Antonio that enjoy them as well.

Recently I rediscovered an old favorite (non-Eurogame): Axis & Allies. We've got a band of 10 or so Axis & Allies fanatics at work and have been getting together once a month for a kind of a "AA Fight Klub" meeting over the last year.

So, I thought I'd drop in, introduce myself, and see if there were any other grizzled grognards interested in exploring the new Anniversary edition that was just released in Nov 08.

Do you all ever meet over a board game at local game shops (e.g., Dragon's Lair or Command Central) to sniff armpits and make sure you aren't axe murderers and have potential to make worthy opponent?

Thanks for the interrupt -- and now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Enjoy the day!
- Bierwagen

Good shot for Sunday if something comes together.

Finals here are either at 8:30am or 2pm.

I thought today's was 8:30am. It's not.

Glad I knew that when I got up at 6:15am.

Which means I'll be there by 10, by the way. And leave at 1.

Bierwagen -- We normally meet at Dragon's Lair on Monday nights. Not much A&A love among this group (or at least, among me).

At 9:58 AM, December 13, 2008, Blogger Bierwagen said...

Thanks for the note!

A&A is definitely an acquired taste. I left it on my shelf for the last 20 years gathering dust. The length of the game really annoyed me.

I really enjoyed all of the Knizia games and the likes of Puerto Rico -- anything that could be taught and played in under two hours.

However, recently I've had an itch to to toss dice, crush my opponents, and conquer the world.

I'll try and drop into Dragon's Lair for a game or two or whatever is in vogue.

Bierwagon:

I enjoy A&A, though the following keeps me from playing very often:

1. Game Length
2. I suck at winning
3. New baby in house

I'm considering picking up the Anniversary edition, if for no other reason to keep my A&A collection complete. Perhaps it will be great fun in the retirement some day.

I am happy to see anyone with an armored fighting vehicle avatar join in the discussion. Do you have a BGG ID?

Bierwagon:

There are several of us who enjoy various wargames. I haven't played A&A in a long, long time.

I'd consider it, but there are other lite wargames that are ahead of it in my queue.

Ben:

BGG ID (BoardGameGeek)? I do have a logon there -- otherwise I'm not sure what you are referring to.

Ted:

What kind of light wargames are you referring to? I've been trying to get my hands on Combat Commander, but it doesn't seem very light and I had no opponents ;-). Memoir '44 scratches an itch and I like the fact that they are short.

AA50 (Anniversary Edition) is a whole new ball-game. Only problem so far is the length. We haven't managed a game in under 6 hours.

Bierwagen, nice to meet you. You will find a great many varied taste in games in this group. The people here have opened my eyes to games that I would not have considered on my own.

There are a few of us who like to get away once in a while with a good old fashion war game. Two gentlemen who have not yet seen this post get together with me sometimes and we have played a few good games. Europe Engulfed is a challenge, although I will not speak of it too much due to my misfortunes last time we played (LoL).

But we have talked about playing A&A from time to time.

So what does it look like for any gaming Sunday?

Bierwagon:

A few of my favorite light wargames that a lot of the others enjoy as well:

Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage
War of the Ring
Command and Colors: Ancients
Combat Commander
Memoir '44
