300!!
Amy and I are going to see 300 this weekend. We'll probably go to the AMC theater at Huebner Oaks. We're undecided on which day, but most likely it'll be Saturday so as not to interfere with Friday gaming. If anyone wants to join us and form a geek-cluster, you're more than welcome. Utilize the comments to RSVP, propose a different theater/day, sing Miller's praises, complain that movie-going just hasn't been the same since the Lord of the Rings trilogy concluded, or whine about having to paint the baby's room. (I'm just teasing, Ted. We're very happy for you and Meredith and Sprout!)

I just saw Spartacus this week. I'd make a negative comment, but I'm afraid that Kirk Douglas' chin would hunt me down. So, thumbs up.
I do like that the Spartans have Uzis. Nicely thematic. And I may actually see this. In the theaters.
But, I personally prefer Frank Miller comics dealing with avenging topless lesbians, strippers, hookers (etc) over avenging near-naked Greeks. Just saying.
So mark me down as a maybe.
I could probably go to an early afternoon showing... perhaps after morning board gaming on Saturday?
Dayna and I are planning on seeing it this upcoming weekend as well. It currently has a 100% on rottentomatoes.com.
Yes, you read that correctly...
We like to go see movies right around when matinee ends (6-ish). That way it's cheap and nighttime (I have a weird thing about having to see movies when it's dark).
And Jeff, how can you say there hasn't been anything good out since LotR? The last two movies I saw were both beyond excellent: Pan's Labyrinth and Children of Men. I would recommend bringing a diaper for either though, as they are intense enough to make you crap a gold brick.
No, seriously.
Pan's Labyrinth and Children of Men are both on my "want to see" list. They'll both be on the top of my NetFlix cue as soon as they go DVD.
Meredith and I are really keen to see this.
What about moving to the Alamo Drafthouse? It's our favorite movie theater in town. They serve you food during the movie, and they have a decent menu w/ reasonable prices. Any place where you can get a beer and watch a movie is pretty cool IMO.
The Drafthouse is on 410W, just south of 151 near Sea World.
Simon - Are you guys going to see it in SA? I'm with you on the whole 'movies are a night-time activity' thing. I can stand going into the theater during the day, but coming out into full sunlight is highly disorienting.
Ben - Despite the (daylight + movies = bad) statements, (morning games + matinee = great idea).
Brian - I am Spartacus!
Ted - I think I would find the presence of waitstaff distracting. I like to be fully immersed in the movie. But that's just me. I think Amy and I will stick with a standard theater, but others might find the Drafthouse idea alluring.
The wait staff at The Alamo Drafthouse doesn't typically serve in the middle of the movie. In fact, they usually ask that you order everything you want up front before the flick starts. That said, they are a bit more expensive and not really my thing, though I do dig their age limit requirement to keep the babies out.
Oh and yes, we are planning on seeing the movie here in town, Jeff. I already asked Dayna and she said she wouldn't mind going with you guys. Of course she posed the prerequisite "Are they going to be good moviegoers and not make a lot of noise?" to which I responded, "Of course, they're geeks like us!"
Hey hey! Sign me up! I could either day. Heck, I could bring my brother along.
Drafthouse? If it is like the one on Crossroads Mall (IIRC), they serve until right before the movie starts. I also prefer the late matinee. It feels great to save those couple of bucks....which you can then use for beer.
btw....I think I can make it to Saturday day gaming....
I may go and bring along a couple of friends.
Wife confirmed. She has a bridal shower Saturday at 1pm, but she thinks she'll be out by 5pm.....that is if we are thinking about Saturday.
Distractions at the Drafthouse are nonzero and vary by employee, but they are usually small.
Meredith and I are semi-serious fans of cinema, and on balance we find the benefits of the Drafthouse outweight the negatives.
YMMV, but I encourage folks to keep an open mind. Mr Rogers encouraged us to try everything before deciding whether or not we like it, and that applies equally to broccoli and the Drafthouse.
Thought this was a bowling thread for a moment.
I would like to do 300 on Saturday. This Drafthouse thing intrigues me, and I would willingly spend the extra couple of bucks to try it once.
Dayna is doing a spay and neuter clinic on Staurday, so she won't be free until after 5pm. As far as I know, we're still a go as long as that's not a problem.
Ok, so what's the verdict.?
Hate to crap on anybody's party here, but vengeful topless lesbians, strippers and hookers sounds much better. They could call it: "300......dollars (anything special will cost you extra)".
Simon's right though, Children of Men is excellent and Pan's Labyrinth is pretty damn good as well. Also check out The Last King of Scotland, The Queen and Notes on a Scandal (Dame Judy is awesome in a scary weird kind of way).
I know this is off the topic completely, but next week is spring break...any gaming happening? I sure would like to check out Perikles, Shogun, Princes of the Renaissance, Space Dealer and a few others.
Alas, next week starting Sunday I'm back in military mode (cue autobot transformer sound) and in Georgia.
Looks like there will be a big group going to the Drafthouse.
I remembered last night that we have dinner guests on Saturday, so it looks like it'll be the post-morning games matinee for Clan Wiles. Who'd have thought that I would ever have enough social events planned that two would conflict?
The post-morning-games matinee works best for me too, so please count me in.
I actually have a few days off from work, so I hope to play this week. I do plan to do a little painting at the house, but that is easily worked around.
SPRING BREEEEEEEEAK!!!
I am also in for Saturday morning games, followed by 300. Just need to know where & when.
There are showings at 11:00 and 11:40 at the Huebner Oaks AMC for the astonishing price of $4. I haven't been to a first-run movie for that cheap since high school. The price for the 1:20 show is $6.50.
Ben, Dennis, Amy and I are going to an early showing on Saturday - probably one of the ones listed. Anybody else joining us? I leave those of you interested in the Drafthouse to make your own plans.
Well, 11am is a bit early. Your impinging on T-Ball time. And there's the fact that I think 300 will be showing at the IMAX (at La Cantera). I believe that it's made for IMAX, not just converted. Have to check.
So I'm looking at a early afternoon (2-ish) showing, either IMAX or Huebner Oaks.
A 2:00 showing is fine with me. We should lock it in now so as to Fandango the tickets in advance perhaps...
Hmmmm... no Fandangoing allowed for Huebner Oaks... also no 300 IMAX in San Antonio this weekend...
2pm I could do.
The review in the New York times is an entertaining read, if not very positive:

Does A.O. Scott like anything?
Not much... I think he's fun to read though. The Rotten Tomato rating is dropping rapidly as well, so we should hurry to see the flick before the hype dies off!
Yeah, but the rotten reviews are pretty funny. They all say, more or less:
1) Not historically accurate
2) Overly violent and over-the-top
3) Looks like a videogame
WTF did these people expect? Can you really criticize something for being too true to its source material. I can respect a bad opinion if it has the right context, but most of these reviewers seem too lazy or stupid to research and understand it's based on a freakin' comic book. It's not some contribution to mankind, people.
I should be at Huebner Oaks around 1:30 or 1:45. How are people planning on getting tickets?
The 2:00 showing works for us, too. I expect we'll be grabbing lunch somewhere in the Huebner Oaks area, and we'll likely grab tickets from the box office before lunching. Showing up at the theatre at 1:30 to 1:45 sounds like a plan. See you there.
I'll be there around that time too with my brother.
Well, I don't think I'm going to be able to make it after all. The T-Ball games got pushed back an hour, and moved to Olmos Park.
