Rules of Acquisition

Now that I've played Caylus (not to be confused with Kayless, the Klingon saviour), I find that it's completely sold out. And, of course, Dragon's Lair doesn't seem to have ever heard of this game. [I tried on Tuesday, last sunday and this sunday]. I've tried several online stores, all gone.

The second printing will be out in two months, but still. It's times like this where I feel that I don't buy games quickly enough. The one time I don't take a chance and pre-order ...

So, did anyone manage to get a copy of this? [Austin, sadly, has four copies. Perhaps we should start a cultural exchange].

I feel your pain. Power Grid (first edition) and El Grande both vanished from my FLGS in Knoxville the week before I decided I needed them. Fortunately, that allowed me to miss out on the typos in 1st ed PG, and I hear that El G will be reprinted in 2006.

In a related question, where did you get your copy of Antike? The online stores I checked didn't have any mention of it; I didn't even bother checking with the staff at Dragon's Lair.

I think about 25% of the games I order, I purchase knowing I won't have time to play them in the immediate future. However, the fear of missing the print run makes me get them anyway!

Case in point: Axis and Allies Pacific; Star Wars Queen's Gambit (bought for $40; now selling for $100 on E-Bay); Star Wars Epic Duels (bought for $20; now selling for well over $100), etc.

I got Antike from Fairplay games. [I missed out on Neuland, and jumped at the chance to get this. Eggert-spiele only makes 500 copies of each game].

Star Wars is going for $100? Wish I'd known that before I moved. I don't remember who I sold it to, but it went cheaply. Actually, I think I gave it to a friend with kids....

Speak of the Devil! I sold my copy of Epic Duels on Ebay last week.

I got $90 for it (shipping included). Not bad for recieving it and another game in trade on the geek for Betrayal at House on the Hill and Dungeon Twister (2 very crappy bland games IMHO). I even chunked out Midevil and Wreckage in the auction as a lot to drive bidding up. Man am I glad I got rid of those stinkers. I'd seriously rather eat glass than play a game of Midevil again.

Sweet, sweet Ebay - How I love thee. Let me count the ways...

Well Jeff, it seems that again waiting may be a good thing. On BGG they are talking about making some subtle improvements in components (but I don't think any rules changes).

So no, I don't have a copy. But I'm starting the line at the RGG offices in NM to get the game.

So it looks like no one is selling their copy on ebay. I got 3 items when I searched Caylus none of which were the game, and 56 items that match the alternate term offered by ebay....

"Did you mean...callus ? (56 items)"

Hmmm.... by the way, what exactly is going on in that picture Brian?

Seeing as how I reference a Ferengi and a Klingon, the picture makes perfect sense. I saw the guy selling on BGG, but he was from Canada, so it probably wouldn't be faster than waiting.

There's a store called purple comics?

Purple Cactus Comics is at Tezel and Guilbeau Road.

What you really want to visit is Central Command Games inside of Purple Cactus Comics.

Central Command Games is only open Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday.

Hehehe Brian, I was being funny. The Ferengi just looks too happy back there.

Central Command focuses mainly on miniatures, but they have more games. Purple Cactus is actually an interesting place: it's a huge shop with many small ones inside like a flea market. Problem is it's a bit far from me when compared to DL.

I am constantly plagued by the feeling that I might miss out on owning/playing a really cool game.

In my rational moments, however, I tell myself that

1. I already don't play the great games I own, so why would I think that I'll play a new game and

2. Even if I miss out on a great game, there will be more where that one came from.
