Tichu for the IPhone is Live!!
I may have a new go-to game of choice for wasting time when I'm sitting at the doctor's office... no offense to any doctors in the house. It's out, and I've played one hand so far... The cost is $3, and it's fairly well rounded. The AI has five skill levels and three "styles" - conservative, normal, and aggressive. Multiplayer is supported through bluetooth - no online multiplayer. The settings page has a decent amount of options, and you know the developer is a Tichu fan when one of the options lets you set which way you pass even cards...
Find it here
What are some of your other favorite board games on the Iphone? My other best purchases so far have been Roll Through the Ages, Carcassone (both have good solitaire versions of the game), and Words with Friends (scrabble clone). In the good but not great category are Button Men, Croke, Hive, Ingenious, Gipsy King.

It seems pretty weak. I've seen it lead 22AAA from a hand with 99P as 3 of it's other cards (not calling Tichu), and my personal favorite, I've called grand, have one card left, partner on lead, Dog2279T, opponents have 4 and 3 cards left respectively. Led 22 (with a pair outstanding, so no perfect information magic lead there). Yuck.
Edited D to Dog to make it more obvious. D for dog, R for dragon?
I've played three games now, and it's a good diversion. I finally feel comfortable "reading" my hand and knowing its potential at the least (something I wasn't even able to do with my handful of games over 3years).
And yes Dave, I've seen my partner pulling some dumb moves that screw me over as I'm above to go out, that not even I would do in real life.
Sean, Samurai sounds great, but I haven't tried it. I think it does multiplayer online. Money is a good diversion too. Reiner's Robot Factory is a great diversion/puzzle game too. His Monumental, is ok, but not great.
I can't wait for Through the Ages, and Neuroshima Hex to come out.
Roll Throught the Ages is awesome, but like the real game for me, it got old real quickly.
I'm giving "Becky" a better skill rating... lets see how it goes.
Unfortunately I just traded with my wife to downgrade my ipod, and I'm not sure I can handle the speed of best, as opposed to better. I'll crank it up one more notch and see, but it's clear the evaluation function is just poor in places, and examining the search space more is unlikely to help.
A few bugs too, I've seen the one where PJQKA can't be played on a straight (though I was able to play a different straight on it). It thought it was legal, it just wouldn't accept the play.
Bluetooth local may be interesting. 4 players gives you a fast dealer and integrated scorer :)
Dave - I found the exact same bug. Looking now for a place to submit the bug report. I agree that the "normal" AI plays - um - "differently" than I would expect. It seems like the AI isn't taking Tichu calls into account as much as it should - the AI still plays it's own hand, and doesn't consider table dynamics very much. I'm going to crank up the AI level to see if that makes a difference.
Ok Becky on Better, did... um... better.
1005 us to 405 (or so). I may have to make my opponents Better too. I don't know if I am too though.
I upped all the players to the highest skill level. The game takes longer, because they think more each turn, but play is much better. I still get plenty mad at my partner... it's funny that I'm patient with real-life partners, but spew venomous words at this AI. So far I've been able to pull out 4 wins and 1 loss...
I need to write the developer about adding an option for Chaos Tichu...
Got it! I like having the opportunity to learn the game a bit more. I've only played it once in person, and it was so long ago I forgot what little I learned.
The fix for the straight bug is out - new version downloaded. The developer also posted a FAQ which includes some details about computer skill levels -- In short, if your partner frustrates you completely, consider bumping it down to "better" instead of "best".
Makes sense. Better is better than best.
This will officially make it into my gamebag likely permanently as a backup... Whenever i do show up for gaming.
We just need everyone to bring their iphones... Are we still board gaming if we are playing a card game on a cell phone? :)
Ok, my partner is still not perfect. I have a 99 to go out on my GT call... partner w 4 cards left is leading.... partner decides to lead with her 4 card bomb.
wtf...
