Hearts of Iron...

has anyone ever played Hearts of Iron? I think it's been mentioned here before, but I may be wrong. HoI III is coming out, and the wargamer in me finds it intriguing.

I think Carlos has mentioned it before and I played HoI II. I also played the history of the world game by the same company.

Civ is better.

I've played very large amounts of Europa Universalis, which is their world history strategy game. I've thought about getting HOI because I love EU so much.

I have HOI because it was dirt cheap but have played it very little; it reminded me that in general I am not a fan of most real time pc games.

I've never played the game before, so my first inclination was to think that Hearts of Iron III needed an additional tagline like:
"Hearts of Iron III:What's this magnet doing on my chest?"

But now I see it's a combat simulation computer game. So that tagline is not so cool...

HOI I was very disappointing because of all micromanaging that went on. HOI 2 was a big improvement, but unless you happen to like meaty war games (simulations), I would stay away.

That said, I did enjoy HOI 2, but the AI was awful. As a German, you never really had to wory about a D-Day because apparently the AI could not coordinate an attack that was cleaver enough to hold the beaches. Getting bogged down in Russia could be another matter...

But the game is an incredible simulation was TONS of detail and decision possibilities. The learning curve was quite steep considering that it is a computer game. It is also somewhat easy to get overwhelmed as the American as you are constantly jumping between the Pacific and European theaters.

One possibility that always fascinated me was the idea of getting a good sized game of 5+ players for an intense session. I think that it allows for team play. I am tempted to check out HOI 3.

Michael is correct in that I did mention this a while back on the blog. At the time I was really into it and probably had a lot more to say.

On another topic, as I am usually behind the curve on things, I just now got Age of Conan. Hoping to play my first test game this weekend with my son.

Good seeing you Rob!

BTW Rob, what are your thoughts on Empire: Total War? Does it come with a soundtrack like Rome did?
