Wargames Next Saturday, 31 Jan 2009

Inspired by Steve's post regarding wargaming today, I thought I'd get a head start on next weekend to see who might be interested in playing more wargames next Saturday. I have a day out of the house scheduled, and what I'm most interested in playing is a wargame of some kind.

Chris and I have tentatively discussed Combat Commander: Pacific, but I'm really up for just about anything if that doesn't work out. If there are more who are interested, 4-player Memoir, Successors, Pacific Typhoon (Axis vs. Allies team variant), or Britannia might be fun. Twilight Struggle with the new Chinese Revolution official game patch seems interesting. With three, After the Flood would be good. Of course, if all else fails, War of the Ring or Hannibal never disappoint.

Certainly having a dark wargaming corner as part of a larger gaming session is always good if someone is hosting a bigger gathering... My 3-month old probably isn't quite ready for such an experience yet, unfortunately.

In unrelated news, I'm officially obsessed with playing Angband. Of course the game does make me want to bash my laptop into a zillion pieces, but its great fun nonetheless.

Games my brain doesn't have capacity to absorb right now, but I want to play sometime with others so inclined: Android, Unhappy King Charles, Barbarossa to Berlin, Paths of Glory, Pursuit of Glory, Napoleonic Wars, Lock 'n Load....

Quick, shameful gamerscore: X-Box 360 Doritos game. 190 points in about 10 minutes.

I am definitely interested but for the moment I need to go down as a 50/50 and will probably not know with more certainty until mid to late week.

Android could be interesting. Perhaps.

Hm. Possible, although that "Dark corner of a larger game day" is tempting. I haven't done CC:E in a while, and could stand WotR, although Here I Stand beckons strongly. Perhaps the tournament scenario (3 turns max).

I'd still like to try Conflict of Heroes, and would love some DBA/HOTT if Steve is around. So I should be available for at least some of the day.

Brian, move to Houston. I'm running a game of HiS next weekend, and I still don't have all the spots filled.

I will come mentally prepared to play Conflict of Heroes (controversial title, to say the least when referring to Wermacht vs. Red Army) or CC:P or E.

The session will fly by far too quickly, I'm sure.

Rob: Yep, its officially time for you to return.

Angband: This game truly teaches you that nature response to hubris is fatal retribution. Sure, I can go one more level without gating back to town. These monsters are wimps! Wait... there's like a hundred of them here...

I may be able to attend, but most of these games are not high on my list of want-to-play.

Please feel free to suggest something else...

Yes, Ted rolls in like a dark cloud. Sorry, kids, looks like rain...

I think there are more than a few of us who wouldn't mind that dark corner of wargaming, even if it's a series of 2 player games. I'm always up for more Combat Commander, Commands and Colors, Memoir '44, etc. I know there's a faction that wants nothing to do with that, though. These people are known as Cylons.

I'm interested in Here I Stand, and I can tell Ted is (I'm kidding) but I'm not sure how many others are. Maybe we ought to just ask around at the next gathering and see who's really interested in HIS, and then just set up a date and play it when those people are available.

When are we playing TI3 again? It's been too long. I know Carlos was interested.

We need a place that has several tables, because if some of us are playing wargames, then there may be two or three games going at the same time. I'm happy to have people over--I've got the dining room for the nonwargamers and the coffee table and fold out table for the wargamers--but I'd also go to DL if people want something more central for at least part of the weekend.

And yes, I'm really up at 1:30am. Glorious work schedule. Only 16 more hours until I get to head home.

I'm interested in Here I Stand in theory, but this is a bad weekend for that.

I was actually just perusing the Jan 2009 update to the TI:3 FAQ. It seems Jon's master deceiver race has been nerfed a tad. The other changes cover esoteric action card interactions for the most part.

Chris' house is gaming nirvana. DL isn't bad either, but has fewer cats dragging off tacos to their doom.

When I devoted a small ice cream scoop or so of my brain to HiS rules infusion, I committed myself to being motivated to play this gem of a game.

HiS interests me but given that I can usually not firm up absolutely my ability to attend until the last minute I don't know that it is in the cards for me. I would certainly be happy in either gaming subgroup; in fact probably a bit more so on the wargaming side since generally the saturday and monday events I can get to don't go that way.

Wait. You mean not everyone is up every night at 1:30 am?

Interesting.

I can't make it this Saturday but perhaps in future incarnations this will be possible. I need to play BSG very badly - feel free to say that in a Gauntlet style voice.

Do we have a location or a time for this Saturday?

I'm still a BSG virgin and am looking to lose this status ASAP.

Red Warrior needs to play badly!

I will be willing to throw myself on a BSG game if I can make it.

Ok, I'm not sure how many we're going to have for Saturday. But I feel pretty sure that there will be some non-wargaming gaming, so don't let the idea that some people may split off to play a wargame scare you away.

Since no one clamored for DL, I'll host and open at 9am on Saturday. It may be a real soft start, though, as Ben and I are planning to get an early start on something wargame-like just so we can get it in. If others want to come over, it might be helpful to give an ETA (9am, 10am, etc.) so that others know what time the other games will commence.

Regrettably it appears i am out for saturday.

Regretably, I must force myself not to trash the games I am holding for you.

Angband lesson of the Day: Never underestimate the value of a Phase Door scroll when entering a suspiciously quiet dungeon level.

I am still a go for Saturday.

My ETA is 10am, after Super Bowl grocery shopping.

I will shoot for showing up at 9, which means I will get there around 10

Ben,
I should be there monday night if you can find a way to offload the games to me then directly or indirectly.

So as long as there will be some non war games at some point, I will show up. Probably around noon. Since I have things in the morning. But there needs to be some non war gaming. Really. :)

So I'm saying there's a chance.

Angband lesson of the day: Never read a mysterious scroll unless you're standing on a stairway or some other rapid exit... it might be Summon Monster, and the monsters it summons aren't the friendly kind.

I am still a go. Bringing CoH, Pac Typhoon, FFG Cosmic Encounter.

Unfortunately I must switch to out. Turns out I'm hosting UFC night too, so all my house prep has to be done by Saturday afternoon rather than Sunday.

Bring Android -- I want to play that. Really. :)
