Bait and Switch

(Purely a Rock Band post; everyone else, move along.)

Got the game, but no sale on drums. I'm hearing that they will arrive at several Gamestops on Monday and at Best Buy on Tuesday. I have one reserved at the latter, but I'll see if I can get lucky with the former after class tomorrow. The universe is achieving karmic balance by giving me a record-breaking fantasy football day (11 TDs with 2.5 players still to go, including Roethlisberger).

If anyone is updating their guitar, and the old one still works, I'd like to buy one off someone (Steve, I'm looking in your direction). I don't intend to play it much, but it would be nice to have one for guests.

Hope you get them soon.

I am RMAing mine so we really need a set in the group.

I'm loving RB2.

Just very low going through unlocking songs.

I was thinking of picking up one of the older $50 drum kits, but after seeing the devastation I was able to rain down on yours Michael, I'm not sure that's a good idea.

I have my gift card to Blockbuster, so hopefully will have the game on Wednesday when they restock. Steve had some awesomely bad luck with some used guitars from Gamestop... so I don't know if that's an option for cheap instrument entry either...

I finished unlocking this morning.

As soon as the 20 bonus songs are available I will have 227 songs available to play.

I thought there were 82 songs on RB2 but it turns out there are 84.

There a few really bad songs on there.

And I mean BAD.

Worse than the ones that we found Saturday night/Sunday morning? Because that would be terrifying.

I just saw the vanilla RB2 drums at the Gamestop on SE Military. I picked up Assassins Creed plus reserved a copy of SW Force Unleashed, available at midnight. I'll get mine tomorrow.20 percent off pre-orders stacks with plus 10 percent on trades at Gamestop -- very nice.

Hurry Dennis!

My guess is all Gamestops have them now. I picked some up at 1604 & 281. I have a couple of responsibilities left here at work, but I can already feel a sudden illness coming on...

Ah good. I was scoping out some used guitars at Gamestop at lunch, and saw them unboxing the new RB2 drums. Glad to see that you've got them already Dennis...

Jon got a set too.

Can you hurry up and get sick I'm almost done with lunch.

Oh pick up a set of rechargeable batteries if you haven't already done so.

Yeah! I survived Ike. Not much happened to my house, my boardgames, and my xbox, so all is well.

Wow...all this storm crap made me completely forget about the release of RB2. I have Force unleashed on preorder (will that be the next GT4? as in 'everyone in the group has it?').

Sean, did you send me a friend request?

Dennis, what's your gamer tag? send it to my email.

Rob,

Forget the force.

Rock. Band. 2.

And yes, I saw that Sean had sent you a friend request.

You may be able to deduce Dennis' gamertag from other sources.

Dennis, I don't have one worth saving. I returned the two demon spawn guitars and got a new one today. That one plus the wireless one (which is passable) will be my two for home gaming.

Did you get the game yet Steve?

I need a report on the new improved drums. How new and improved are they?

At 2:17 PM, September 16, 2008, Blogger Dennis Ugolini said...

The new drums are pure liquid winning.

They are about half as loud, and require almost no pressure to trigger -- a slight tap with a finger is enough. The surface is quite elastic, which allows really fast rolls with little force exerted. I can let the stick tip drop from two centimeters above the pad, and it will typically register ~4 hits from the bounces. I do all but the fastest rolls with one hand.

There have been reports on the Rock Band forums of a substantial number of drums sets having two problems -- dropped hits on the red pad, and cross-talk between the middle two (blue pad hits triggering the yellow pad). I have zero cross-talk, and while I notice a couple of misses on really fast rolls, I suspect it is lack of talent rather than functionality.

I couldn't be happier. Alas that I work until 8pm today, but I'll be working my way through the songs on Quickplay as soon as I can.

Now that sounds tasty. Unfortunately Michael, I think I won't be seeing an open Best Buy, Circuit City, or Fry's around here in a while.

As soon as the 20 bonus songs are available I will have 227 songs available to play.

I saw a Rock Band 2 commercial today. If you read the fine print on the title splash screen at the end, you'll see something along the lines of this phrase:

500 songs available for RB2 by Holiday 2008.

Let me say that again:

500 songs.

Yes, it includes all the RB1 songs. Who cares? It's 500 songs.

Endless-Setlist THAT.

500 songs. Almost makes me want a copy. Almost.

Now you do the math...106 days left in the year. That's 15 weeks. Assuming Michael's count is correct, there are 227 songs out right now (if there are songs that Michael doesn't have, I'm guessing the number of those is so infinitessimally small as to be insignificant).

500-227 = more than 227.

So Harmonix has to double the number of available songs in RB1 and RB2 combined in 3 1/2 months.

That comes out to about 18 songs released per week, starting this week. That's a pretty tall order.
Still, an album per week gives you about 12. Throw in another 5-6 unrelated singles (some of which may be from the Harmonix house band) and they might make it.

(I hope they're not counting XB360 and PS3 and Wii songs separately. That'd be CHEAP.)

Chris, there are more songs than what Michael has right now, he just has not bought them.

Wow. I can't believe it. But I guess that must be the case. Those must be some really terrible songs.

BTW, the commercial is here. Ignore that the sound is not synchronized to the video. Pause it at 0:54 and do a little reading.

P.S. How did they get Richard Garriott to do the commercial? Good to see him doing well.

There are 58 songs in RB

218 downloadable songs

84 from RB2

and 20 that they will release sometime soon for everyone who purchased RB2

Grand total of 380 songs released so far.

That still leaves 120 songs in 15 weeks, so 8 songs a week. Still a pretty good number of songs to release each week.

Lets hope that most of it is good.

At 8:10 AM, September 17, 2008, Blogger Dennis Ugolini said...

They are going to make it by releasing entire albums each week as downloadable content. I think "Peace Sells..." by Megadeth is next (the title track is already in RB2).

More evidence of drum winning: I four-starred Aqualung (92%) and Down With the Sickness (90%) on Expert on my first try. No way I do that with the old ones.

At 12:14 PM, September 17, 2008, Blogger Unknown said...

Jon is right. There are many songs I haven't downloaded. I'm not that indiscriminate with my choices Chris.

We've got Talking Heads now on RB2 - we still need The Cure... any other notable band exceptions??

At 2:53 PM, September 17, 2008, Blogger Unknown said...

Well the Beatles are sort of conspicuous in their absence.

At 8:48 PM, September 17, 2008, Blogger seanp said...

Indeed. Doesn't Michael Jackson hold the license to a lot of their songs??

At 9:26 PM, September 17, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The big one missing I remember them talking about on the news was Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant basically said "I don't want anyone messing with the master tapes" because of what might happen if they got messed up. I don't think he gives a flip about the licensing fees that Harmonix was offering. Oh well. I'll live.

As soon as my TV room isn't an active construction site, perhaps I'll try this guitar thing again... I'm starting to feel like I must be missing something.

I think he might (re:Michael Jackson and Beatles).

This might mean that they will be represented eventually on the GH:WT franchise as IIRC Beat It is on there.

I've made my bed already though.

At 12:28 AM, September 18, 2008, Blogger seanp said...

The thing that's attractive about GH4 is the "create your own songs" portion - depending on how well that works, there could be a LOT of user created content, especially of niche genres. Hopefully the RockBand guys will come up with a way to do something similar.
