Alea Iacta Est: Conquest of the Empire this week

Alrighty, Legionnaires! Let's get down to planning on actually playing this big mother of a game rather than just thinking about it.

Personnally, I'm pretty flexible this week other than Monday and Friday. I recommend we start as early as possible so as to be sure to finish the game.

To cast the initial die, I'll throw out Wednesday evening as a possibility...

Of course, if we can't get four or more brave souls together for this, I'm always willing to play whatever else...

I am good as long as it is not this friday.

Also, we should play with the 2nd version of the rules. The redone orginal rules still do not look very good.

I second the rules choice. Supped up Risk with a catapult grabbing frenzy doesn't sound nearly as exciting as political treachery in the senate.

Any day is good for me incidentally...

Ah, to be unemployed again.

I could handle Weds or Thursday. Are the rules online? [I've played Struggle of Empires, so I suspect I'm most of the way there]. I do see that the geek has a two page reference sheet. [I think I got most of it from that, but the full rules would be nice].

If we don't have to explain the rules, that's an extra 1/2 hour. I believe the Game Ranch took about 5 hours to play their first game.

Tuesday seems best for me if by "starting early" you mean earlier than 5pm. Wednesday could be cool too... if we are starting around 7pm or so.

I can see it... My name is Robertus Gluteus Maximus Pectoralis Major, Commander of the Armies of SA, General of the Jedi Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor Reiner Knizia, husband to a non-gaming wife, and I will have my vengeance -- in this life or the next!!!!!!

I count six legionnaires vying to control the Empire at this point (seven if Patrick is available - whatever happened to that couple who wanted to play?). CotE only supports six, right? If Ben's hosting and you're playing on Wed or Thurs, I can be an alternate in case something comes up at the last minute. Ben and Rob are the only SABGers who live close enough to me that I could rush over at short notice. Are the rules posted at BGG the 2nd Ed ones? Those are the ones packaged with the new edition, right? I may just show up regardless to watch and maybe get in some two-player action with any other extraneous gamers.

Here's some responses:

1. CotE2 is definitely my choice as well.

2. I haven't seen the full rules on-line for the CotE2, but the 2-pager at BGG does a pretty good job.

3. How about tomorrow, Tuesday, at 1730 hours (5:30 PM), at Dragons Lair? Its probably the most central location for everyone, and its zero maintenance.

4. If somehow there's more than six, there's plenty of room for some side games to get going.

I will definitely be at Dragon's Lair tomorrow. (I normally play Shadowfist on Tuesdays anyway). I'll bring War of the Ring, that way if we have too many, then we can duck a 2player game of that. I may bring a few other random games, too.

I am gradually, painfully learning the importance of coordinating my gaming plans with the family social committee...

I now have other plans on Tuesday... so, I'll have to either miss out or hope we can play later in the week. Wed or Thur looks good for me.... :)

Weds?

Wednesday and Thursday both look good for me.

I hope others can change also becaue it would stink if the person who is putting all the work into getting a game together does not get to play.

I just scanned in the rules for the 2nd version of play. So, if anyone needs them just let me know and I can email it to you.

I just figured out my scanning was for nothing because the rules are on BGG.

They are called "for pdf-2[1].indd.pdf" and were the first file to be submitted under COTE 2005 entry on BGG.

Oh well, I was just scanning while watching the Notre Dame and Ohio State game so I did not really lose that much time.

I'm available Wednesday and Thursday this week. Looks like Thursday is the better day in general. Ben gets the unenviable task of coordinating the event since its his game. I suspect that organizing a large group of gamers is like herding cats. :) Same time, same place, new day?

Okay, let's try this:

Thursday, Dragons Lair, 5:30 PM

(fingers crossed)

Thanks all for the flexibility!

Well Thursday I can't. That's fine. Again, I'm not anticipating much gaming this month.

Now Brian correct me if I'm wrong, I think they only do game nights at DL on Monday , Tuesday, and Friday.... meaning they close early on all other days.

I think I can do Th. If I make it, I'll bring Hammer of the Scots as a hedge against too many players. I doubt that we would actually get more than 6 people to show up, however. Life is just too complex.

On Wednesday and Thursday Dragon's Lair shuts down at 9:00 PM.

I believe we can host (5:30, either Wednesday or Thursday), and we're right down the street from Dragon's Lair. For what it's worth.

Amy,

That sounds great! If not, I can host as well.

Ben

It's your call as to the location, Ben. I suspect that you hosting will be easier: no lugging that massive Conquest box around; board, cards and pieces can be set up the night before if desired, etc.

But, like Amy said, our place is available if that's the best option since we don't close at 9:00 PM like Dragon's Lair.

Okay, I'll host. I'll get the game set up the night before so as to facilitate a quick start.

If anyone needs directions, just shoot me an e-mail at ben@vickiandben.net.

Wow, I really appreciate how motivated everyone seems to be to make this happen!

Well, the 4'x4' game board is set up and ready to roll.

I'm not 100% sure who's coming, but I figure we'll start the first turn at 1800 hours, allowing for traffic delays, rules review, and pizza ordering.
