Thanks to Jon for a great afternoon of gaming. We played Manoeuvre and Twilight Struggle. Jon soundly trounced me twice! ARgh! Now to go take out some frustration in GTA4...

GTA4 has taken over my life.

How's Maneovre? Sounded to me like spiked chess.

FINALLY played WotR with Third Age expansion for the first time. It was freaking sweet! I played the Fellowship and was literally 2 spots away from dunking The One, but alas, all my trebuches and Galadriel and a few regulars weren't enough to stop the Shadow from taking over Lorien (the last VP's needed for their win). And I did it without my last dice (I was never able to crown Aragorn...)

Some highlights to me at least... The Corsairs and the Dundenlins complicate things A LOT more for the FP, who could in the base game simply ignore pretty much everything west of Mordor. Not this time. Even the Shire fell in this game.

I was able to pull out Treebeard, but the freaking Ent cards never came up. Plus, with the Dundelins, I see no reason why the SP would use The Voice of Saruman (which would trigger a free Ent recruit).

Smeagol? FREKING SWEET! I actually got him IN Mordor, but with the second Smeagol Hunt tile, my opponent essentially got 2 rounds of Hunting with 0 corruption.

Never playing WotR w/o expansion ever again.

I have just ordered WoTR (reprint) and am eagerly awaiting its arrival; however, now, it looks like I may need to order this expansion as well. Once I am up and running with it I will need a kind soul or two to educate (read: "trounce") in the ways of Middle Earth!

I think I've played WotR something like 20 times at least this past year. Steve has played even more. Yep, we can show you.

Comparisons between Manoeuvre and Chess have been overstated, in my opinion. Its chess with lots of die rolling, super powered card combos, ranged fire, terrain, fortifications, spies, supply, reinforcements, eight different armies, and probably 20 different board pieces you arrange each game into a 4-board map. I would say its closer to Commands and Colors Ancients with fewer units and Napoleonic theme. I like the ancients theme better, but its a good, light, quick wargame.

GTA4 keeps getting better and better story and fun-wise, though I had to engage maximum corruption energy screens long ago.... definitely NC-17 rating.

I think the Ents in the expansion are not very strong, as the Shadow player they have never deterred me from using Sauron's power.

The Ents at best are an annoyance for the SP, the best I have ever seen them do is take a 10 strength shadow army, and this was with all of the Ents in play and using all the Ent cards at once. Even that only cost me a little time to rebuild the army. Usally as the FP I have better way to spend my dice than to bother with the Ents.

I have had some time to ponder this as I have probably played with the expansion 30-40 times.

hmmm....seeing how good the expansion is, I'm jealous of 'y'all's' (apostrophe overload) number of plays.

Maybe the true goal of the Ents, like in the books, is to knock down Saruman (and thus his spawning power). But again, I find that, although not as powerful, the Dundelings spring up easily and plentifully just north of Orthanc (I think from some event cards) almost negating the need for Saruman's spawning ability.

Of course, I'm drawing conclusions on just one game, so this may change after other plays.

Oh, and another thing to add to my WotR story... For the first three rounds, I didn't roll a single character die to start pushing the Fellowship with (or a Will of the West). And I refused to spend a ring that early in the game. Maybe I should have.....specially if the Shadow had a low number of dice in the Hunt pool.
