Mid-Week Random Thoughts

It seems like forever since I had a solid 9-5 day of board gaming. Perhaps this holiday weekend will fix that. I have been super duper busy the past few weeks, and 36 hours of house painting over the past four days have eaten up a bit of free time. Heck, I've had a large, sealed box from Thought Hammer looking at me for almost a week, but I'm just too pooped to enjoy the experience of cracking it open. In that box alone are probably enough games to keep me happily engaged for the 6 months: Empire of the Sun, Blackbeard, Here I Stand, Aquaretto.

Kevin Wilson just released a wonderful Build Your Own Hero tool for Descent. Now we need the build your own monster tool... We need to get RtL back to the table.

Rob: When are we playing Europe Engulfed?

I hear rumors of a TI:3 game in NW San Antonio this weekend. I wish you all well! I need to play again.

While painting this weekend, I listened to a 12-hour series of podcasts on ancient warfare. One interesting factoid was that the word decimate comes from the Roman practice of executing one out of every ten surviving soldiers from a legion if they lost a battle. Now if I could only put that into practice at my job...

GTA4 is still wonderful. I'm progressing slowly still, but having a blast. I think my real life driving skills have devolved a bit, as I now find it excruciating to sit through a red light.

Okay, I'm getting the bedtime summons. Have a great week! Let's play games on Saturday!

I too have been out of the loop; we are trying to close on a house in the Alamo Heights/ Terrel Hills area. I must admit, I've been affected; I can't look through a house without affording ample consideration for game closets, table space, and of course beer brewing space --priorities!

Hopefully I too can get some gaming in this weekend, take care and prepare to move cubes.

Another gamer moves to my part of town. Excellent!

I'm currently finishing the process of gutting about a third of my house, with a key objective being the addition of gaming and closet space. Its difficult to find big homes in this part of town with ideal gaming space (unless you're mega-rich), but with the right amount of sheetrock and courage, anything is possible.

Wow, Here I Stand is a very cool game. I can't believe I missed out when it was played by SABG last year. Any interest in doing so again?

I just watched Resident Evil on SciFi Channel. Raccoon City? Something tells me we lost something in the translation from the original Japanese.

Okay, back to GTA4, with periodic check-ins on the Spurs.

HiS: I have the 2 player variant from C3i, but still haven't tried it.

The two player variant is apparently a good way to learn the basic system by playing just the Papacy vs. the Protestant Reformation. I imagine playing Henry VIII would be great fun.

I'd be up for Here I Stand at some point. (I wouldn't mind starting on T4 for our first time, since that will shave 3 hours off the game, so it will be 1-5 hours). We'll need a full day, just to be safe, though.

I can host Saturday. I can start at 9am and I don't really have an end time this weekend, just whenever people get tired.

So far, two big games have been suggested (Road to Legend and Here I Stand). I'd like to play either one. My suggestion would be to start with Here I Stand and then see what people feel like when that game is over. My gut feeling is that if Here I Stand isn't the first thing out on the table, we're not going to get enough momentum going to get it out later in the day. And I definitely think we need to save it for a day Brian is available.

I can't figure out what's the "right" way to abbreviate Here I Stand. Both "HIS" and "HiS" look strange.

Anyway, what other game has players roll on the pregnancy table?

I'm happy to say that in my 1 game, I ran away with it as the Protestants. Once people noticed, they started putting the hurt on me, but it was too late. I flirted with all three victory conditions.

My primary goal in the game wasn't to win so much as to convert Scotland, which I managed to pull off. These days I'm going to a Presbyterian church; they were particularly strong in Scotland.

Nice.

Lemme know when you guys play here I stand. So I can make sure not to come. Or something. I don't know, it just doesn't seem like a fantastically wonderful game that appeals to me. But then again that might be the Political, Negotiation and Wargame labels on BGG.

All that is to say, I should be there this weekend for the gaming. Unless its HiS of HIS or whatever we decided looks cooler to shorten it.

Wow... Gulp. I haven't yet read the 50 page rulebook for HIS, so I wouldn't mind waving off for a week or so.

The one game I will be ready to teach 2-4 players is the new GMT Blackbeard game.

I'm available on Saturday, and would like to play non-all-day games, so will be in THAT group. I might bring Command and Colors: Ancients just because I've got it all stickered up, and haven't gotten a chance to play it yet.

Blackbeard might be fun.

Just to clarify - I can play games all day, just don't want to play ONE game all day.

I can make it Saturday, and I would be interested in keeping up the smack down of Ben the evil overlord in Road to Legend.

Practicing evil laugh (cough, cough)... I'm going to play Blackbeard against Evil Ben this evening just in case.

I think I mentioned this already though just not on here. I would not be against a RtL session. i just wont be able to arrive until 10, 1030 ish.

i am a maybe for saturday; hopefully things will clarify by this time tomorrow.
If I can make it I would be flexible to try any of the games mentioned or to finish off my first time through the baseball league if Michael can do so.

I think we'll be there ...

i am a no for Saturday morning
Saturday afternoon possible but not likely
if anything is going on Sunday or Monday I would probably be in

Ok, let's officially postpone Here I Stand at this point. Haven't heard from Michael yet, so we'll see if he posts or shows up for RtL. It wouldn't be hard to substitute someone in, but I'm pretty sure Michael wants to play RtL.

Sounds like we'll have a reasonable crowd to run the non-RtL games as well.

Sean, I'll play CnC:A with you for certain. I'd bet Ben and/or Chris will tag in as well.

I am having a game of TI3 at my house on Saturday morning at 9:00. This was meant as a game for those who have not yet played, but one of the players had to bail. We have one or two available slots if you want to join in. Let me know.

Ok I am planning to come and am catching a ride with Jon I think.

I am up for RtL of course.

Or 7A if we are sticking to initials.

That may be harder to do though.

And I still need to finish that series with Brian. Sorry about Monday, i totally screwed up my back fixing our fence and I could barely move.

Speaking of Bridge (from the previous post), I wish I had my system notes from my old club partnership. We had a very adventurous strong club system with lots of home brewed ideas that are gone from my memory now. The theory of bidding systems is interesting and something that really drew me to bridge.

At nationals I played a more mundane 2/1 system which would be relatively close to Bridge World Standard.

The first bridge book I read was a 1960's copy of Goren's Bridge Complete that my dad had. Honestly, I would recommend that book pretty highly for a beginner if you can get your hands on a copy. The bidding stuff is pretty old fashioned, but if I recall correctly, he goes into some detail about the reasoning behind the bid meanings instead of just throwing out a bunch of rules. His sections on card play are excellent as well.

And for "light" reading, Victor Mollo's Bridge in the Menagerie books are classics.

Steve: I'm there.

RtL: Yes!

Anyone up for Memorial Day gaming?

At 6:59 PM, May 23, 2008, Blogger scott said...

it turns out I am in for Saturday after all
So do we have an actual short list of games hitting the table to start with; I am not sure if I have tracked all the threads
I will bring baseball just in case but it sounds like that series is not likely to get played tomorrow

At 7:20 PM, May 23, 2008, Blogger scott said...

I was doing some quick research on Here I Stand. if it is going to hit the table and there is a seat available I would love to be in.

At 7:40 PM, May 23, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think its the usual "Lets see what everyone wants to do when they get here." We've tried shortlists in the past and they end up becoming largely irrelevant.

I think a lot of people are going to be interested in the 1-1.5 hr type games. But bring what you like.

I'm fine for shorter fair (and finishing my series vs Michael). I can wait on HiS.

I'll bring random games and a few bridge books to loan out (if people want). My bridge game tonight went very well .... 11 good boards, 1 fix, 3 disasters, 10 averages.
