Mostly Random...

Ben wondered recently "Comment 29 to this post... perhaps the most ever?"

Nope.

Even thought the thread that his musing was in has hit 35 comments, it still falls short of the record - a whopping 41 in a thread Ben himself started last December.

While browsing through the archives to find this useless trivia nugget, I learned several things.

We've only hit 30+ comments about half a dozen times.

Usually, the thread is about a wargame or a game with a ton of plastic.

I miss the SABGers who've moved on: Kendahl, Patrick and Simon.

Michael has always been verbose; he writes very entertaining and very accurate session reports.

It's high time Ben and I played War of the Ring again.

Do we still have comments for guests turned off? Was that to prevent spam? Was spam ever a problem?

Excellent post, Jeff!

I just loosened up comment priviledges to anyone who is a Google registered user. The only other setting is open to anyone, which I think might be a bit too open... We were spam bombed a bit at the very beginning, so we turned it onto max setting early on, which may have been too strong a reaction. Comment away, kind readers!

I too miss our dear departed members. I keep searching for opportunities to go visit Kendahl again, but nothing has panned out as yet. Still, we seem to keep slowly growing despite attrition.

I'm available either Saturday or Monday for War of the Ring! Anyone wanting to try Arkham while my brain is still holding the rules in the frontal lobes will receive a favorable response as well.

Any chance we can stage an intervention for Simon, Dennis, Rick, Kirk, Chad and any other local slackers who no longer fulfill their "duty to the party"? I miss our monster mondays and Simon returning would practically double the support for party style games.

On a related note, I think it is better if we try to keep our gaming sessions at DL on Mondays. I understand the desire to protect components and such but for instance last Monday was a dismal failure for anyone who showed up at DL at a typical time hoping to just randomly happen into a game. I was aware of the Descent marathon at Rob's but wanted to be present at DL in case any immediate gaming opportunities presented themselves so didn't trek over there.

I gave up at 6:30 after approximately 2 hours of waiting and the closest I got to playing a game was when the two guys working talked about potentially demoing apples to apples for one of their friends. I tried to push for this to happen but had no luck.

We had turned off comments by non-SABGers for two reasons:

1. They weren't commenting.
2. The wavy letters were annoying.

I miss our monster mondays

I miss it sometimes, too. My take is that the group will evolve to meet the needs of the members. This is as it should be.

Change is inevitable. Do not fear change. We are the river, not rocks. If your cheese is gone, go look for it: that's the 8th habit of highly successful gamers. Be the ball. Be a 59 sec employee so you can stay ahead of your 1 min manager.

If folks aren't coming on Mon, it's because Mon isn't meeting their needs or their needs changed.
The Monday "random open gaming" does not suit my schedule, so I stopped going. I'm happy Saturday morning is becoming a staple.

Rule #1: Get your game on
Rule #2: When in doubt, see #1

I actually have changed my recurring day off (i.e., every other week) to be on Monday so as to better participate in the sessions this Summer. My evenings these days are usually pretty busy with various responsibilities, so I'll be up for kicking off Mondays when DL opens, but I need to take off around the time the evening crowd arrives.

Heh. I was there from about 4pm until 5pm... we must have just missed each other.

Just polling - would a different weeknight be a better fit? Or would those of you who don't come on Monday not come on a Tuesday or Thursday either?

I know that I won't make many Saturday sessions - that's family time and the boys aren't old enough to join in most of the gaming goodness yet. I don't think you can expect everyone to make it to everything - but I'm glad there are both options available to meet the needs of both groups.

We've had the "Is Monday the best night?" discussion before, and there's never been a strong enough argument for any other night for us to move it.

Some nights are out simply because DL is too busy (there's barely enough room for both us and the Go club on Mondays). Tuesday night is minis night and Shadowfist, Friday is Magic night (plus someone usually hosts - normally Brian and Jacqui). I don't know what goes on Wed and Thurs, but I would be surprised to find out that the place was deserted save for the cliche tumbleweeds.

If I remember correctly DL closes early on thursdays (9pm). At least it did the one time I ever was there on that day.
