Monday Gaming at a Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy

....called Dragon's Lair. Sorry, I just watched Episode IV last night while working out, and the movie has saturated my consciousness today.

I have the day off, so if anyone is up for some gaming fun just let me know. Some other thoughts:
  • Brian: Now that Flying Colors is getting an expansion I decided to download the rules and look them over. Wow, short and sweet! I'm totally up for playing, and I plan on getting a copy.
  • Commands and Colors: Ancients gets expansion number 3, Roman Civil War... nice! Time to re-read my Julius Caesar...
  • If you own Civ 4, you owe it to yourself to download the Fall From Heaven 2 mod. It rocks! Thanks, Michael!
  • The upcoming Combat Commander: Paratrooper Battle Pack looks intriguing... I'm somewhat unsure I actually like the game, but I figure the scenarios surely must get even better as the designers get more experience. In the mean time Band of Heroes: Swift and Bold is swiftly approaching.
  • Okay, time to go wash the car... I'll quit procrastinating now!

While I'm very impressed by the Fall From Heaven II mod, I'm even more impressed by the amazing base game that enabled these guys to put together such a fantastic mod (relatively) easily.

If you decide to give it a shot here is the site to download it from.

I might be able to make it early on monday.

One other note on FFH II. My biggest gripe with the mod is the notable lack of documentation about features in the game (the civilopedia is a joke at the moment for the most part) so some of your early plays will probably be trial and error fumbling around to figure out how things work.

The reason for the barebones nature of the documentation is that the current release is v 0.22 and the developers don't want to spend alot of time on documentation that will almost certainly need to be changed multiple times before they arrive at the final version.

What I enjoy most about FFH2 is how unique each civilization is. For instance, one of the two dwarf civilizations is obsessed with gold (makes sense...). If you have $500/gold or more per city stored in a unique dwarven vault building, then you get a mega-happiness bonus. Its tough accruing that initial hoard and even tougher expanding, but this makes the game nicely challenging.

The other dwarf civilization are golem builders. Golems are cheap and good military units, but don't gain XP. However, you do have one proto-type golem hero unit (i.e., the one all others are based on) that does gain experience. Any golems built after he levels up start out with his experience from the start.

I'm now playing as the vampires, who seem to get tons of bonuses for killing off their own population (i.e., human cattle) periodically.

Ok, I'm reinstalling Civ IV.... after I move to league City. I can't play 2+ hrs of Civ IV with my computer on the floor as it is right now. My back can't stand it. (Again, I'm currently staying at my parents' as I prepare to move on 6/9).

I'm pretty sure I can be there early too. All systems go for now.

Ben -- I'll have to look over the Flying Colors rules again. I can't make this monday (until 4pm, and you are usually gone) so perhaps after you get back from your trips. We just missed the Glorious First of Jone. (I've now read 24 novels set in the Age of Fighting Sail ... 7 left to finish both series).

Hmmm....as I suspected with this being a relatives-in-town-heavy weekend, I will have a mid afternoon dinner with them at my parents'. IF I show up, it will be early morning and leaving by noonish or so, OR go later after like 7pm or so. I'll just play it by eat. No high hopes though.....just when I was getting hooked on Notre Dame.
