Wargame Night.... Well, Perhaps Not Quite..., 1 May 2006
Ted's planned night of warfare, mayhem, and destruction was a well attended event with approximately 8 members of our fine society dropping in to do battle. Games I saw or heard played were Fairy Tale, Cash and Guns, Twilight Struggle, Vinci, Pitchcar, and War of the Ring... Not exactly wargame night, but... well, there was some serious butt-kicking, in particular Brian kicking mine at Twilight Struggle and War of the Ring. I tremendously enjoy both games, and I plan to keep bringing them to future meetings. Cash and Guns was a fun game, though I think I enjoy the cowboy theme of Bang! just a bit better.
All-in-all, a solid night of gaming. I can't wait until next Monday!
P.S.: One thing I noticed last night was how many interested on-lookers there seemed to be. In the future I'm going to produce an upgraded form of our club business card (with Gmail address) to pass out to anyone who comes by and expresses more than a passing interest.

Dennis: Please bring Battlegrounds next time. I'd love to give it a try.
Wow! I'm going to have to guard my new games from Simon's reviews like a protective mother sheltering her vulnerable young...
On to commentary:
Twilight Struggles
I posted a topic down my thoughts on the game. I've pondered a bit about what could have changed the game I played a good deal and still felt it wouldn't have swung my opinion by much. I'm totally missing the bandwagon on this one...
PitchCar
I really love this big, dumb game and last night yielded the same amount of flicking fun as one would come to expect. Our first track included Rob, Dennis, Michael, Jon and me. It was centered around a monumental jump of about three to four track widths long. While Dennis biffed the jump over and over in his heat, he came out three for three in the actual race and killed the rest of us. The winner's circle turned out 1 D, 2 S, 3 M, 4 R, 5 J (I think). Then, half of the group took off and left us Rob-less. We set up another even larger track that involved a tunnel and multiple sticky turns. While I lead most of the race, I messed up some shots at the end that put me a few flicks behind Jon coming into the final leg of the race on the third lap. Fortune smiled upon me, however, as I pulled of a ridiculous three segment hook shot that bumped Jon right off the track. Dennis had a reversal of luck and caused the winner's circle to appear 1 S, 2 J, 3 M, 4 D.
Battleground: Fantasy Warfare
My musing on BGG:
"Well, the game suffers from the standard miniatures game problems while abandoning the time-honored aspects of the genre most would consider sacrilege. Its very dice heavy, has hints of minor unbalances, and perhaps is a bit too long for what it is. Sure, not having to paint and assemble is nice, but its still a miniatures game when the day is over and done with and consequently carries its stigma. I will say the command point mechanic is quite brilliant in evoking the field general feeling, however, and should be commended for its prowess."
So there it is folks. Until next time...
Ben: I'm still not Brian's level with a 5 point average on all ratings or Patrick's by saying "so why is this game fun?" during rules explanation. So, I've got a bit to go before you need to hide away the games...
There you go, disrespecting the Care Bears again. Rebecca will have your head, I say.
Great picture, but it wasn't that bad. Ben, you're obviously old school when it comes to wargames. But you're right, I didn't spot a hexagon the whole night. I thought about dusting off my 31 year old copy of Panzerblitz...maybe some other time. Nonetheless, I had a great time as the shakiest gun in the west in the two games of "Cash and Guns". Can't wait to play again.
Dennis finally talked us into a game of Vinci (he's brought it to 3 or 4 previous gaming sessions I've been to). It's similar to "History of the World" with some nice "Civilization" development elements. Jon took an early lead and never looked back. I can't wait for a rematch.
Ben, ignore Simon. He is learning fast from Patrick and Brian. Of course, in the other end of the spectrum you have Tom Vasel who rates highly ALL games he plays (for the record, all highly respected by me). Still, a bad review from a fellow SABG'er will sour any game session. Can't we all just get along?
You know, I've thought it would be fun pushing some buttons to see what the group thought by starting a thread on how boardgamegeek.com ruined my boardgaming hobby.... by transforming me from a naive gamer who enjoyed any game 2 yrs ago, to a cynical reviewer of games that now won't enjoy some of them because of lame mechanics, luck factor, low replayability , poor quality components, etc.
BTW, AWESOME picture.
And Dennis, sign me up for the next round of Vinci. Is it ever coming out with nicer components?
"Ben, ignore Simon."
"Ben, don't listen to Simon."
"Can't we all just get along?"
Yes, ignore me and don't listen to me...We sure are getting along just fine.
Opinionated reviews don't sour my gaming, bad games and snarky comments do.
Can't we all just learn from the carebears, man? They have friggin' bunny shaped clouds for God's sake!
Man...I'm not even there and I'm getting called our for being too opinionated. Awesome!
I do want to give some props to pitch car. If only it weren't so expensive. Anyone want to sell an old copy =)
LOL Simon.
(passes around the cold Shiner bock) cheers.
Gosh, I'm going to miss all this for 6 weeks.
